At the international departures hall of Beijing Capital Airport, Marc Lambert from Belgium stood at the check-in counter, frowning (皱眉). He had arrived in China with one suitcase. Now he was checking in two. “My first suitcase was full a long time ago,” he told Beijing Review. “Next time, I’m bringing three empty ones.”

Lambert is not an outlier Across TikTok, YouTube and Instagram, a new label has crystallized around this reverse flow of luggage: “China Haul.” The format is simple—foreign visitors film themselves unpacking what they bought in China—but the volume tells a different story. On TikTok alone, videos under the “China Haul” tag have surpassed 110 million views. One Instagram comment, widely shared, has become the trend’s informal slogan: “I highly recommend that anyone traveling to China pack as light as possible—because you will absolutely shop yourself into exhaustion.”

The contents of a China Haul video trace a quiet but unmistakable shift. The “old three” that once defined a trip to China—tea, silk and panda plushies (毛绒玩具)—have been displaced by a list dominated by Chinese-made smart devices: pocket gimbals (云台), AI translation glasses, foldable phones, drones and action cameras.

Shenzhen’s Huaqiangbei, theexpansiveelectronics market district, has become a must-visit destination. Data from the subdistrict (小区) shows that nearly 8,000 foreign merchants visit daily for purchasing. AI products now account for 61 percent of electronics on offer there, up from 41 percent in 2025. AI glasses sales have doubled, and drone and robot sales have climbed 60 to 70 percent year on year. A Ghanaian content creator’s video testing a robot dog in Huaqiangbei drew more than 740,000 views on YouTube by mid-October.

Beyond hardware, a second layer of the haul is cultural and sensory. Suzhou’s Pingjiang Road draws visitors to intangible-heritage shops selling Su embroidery (刺绣品) fans and sachets (香囊). Loquat paste (枇杷膏) and moxibustion (艾灸) tools have been nicknamed “Chinese miracle remedies” by overseas users. Shanghai-based footwear brand PANE now sees foreign customers account for 30 percent of foot traffic and 35 percent of sales. Pop Mart, the Chinese collectible toy company, reported 37.12 billion yuan in 2025 revenue, with overseas sales exceeding 40 percent.

The trend is not merely a matter of taste. A deliberate lowering of friction (摩擦) has made “buying in China” a practical part of the itinerary (行程) item rather than an afterthought. China’svisa-free policy now covers 50 countries, with 57 countries eligible (符合条件的) for 240-hour transit visa-free entry. Departure tax refunds have moved from airport counters into shopping districts: in Shanghai’s Yuyuan area, spending, currency exchange and tax refunds can be completed within a five-minute walk. Overseas bank cards can now be linked to Chinese mobile payment systems, and hotels and malls increasingly offer international shipping.

The product landscape itself has changed the calculation. “Chinese products aren’t exactly cheap, but there are a lot of choices and everything is made to appeal—they’re built to sell,” Lambert said. A widely cited analysis of the trend notes that the core motivation of foreign shoppers has shifted from “novelty hunting” to “value recognition”—they are buying not because the goods are exotic (异国风情的), but because of quality, design and practicality.

From “China Travel” to “China Haul”

从“China Travel”到“China Haul”

The chronology matters. The trend followed “China Travel”, when foreign creators filmed landscapes, and then “Chinamaxxing,” when they began engaging more deeply with daily life. “China Haul” represents a third stage: consumption as documentation. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ningspoke aboutthe trend at a regular press briefing on October 16, saying that more foreign friends now believe “China is worth visiting, Chinese brands are worth buying, and Chinese-style life is worth experiencing.”

The footprint is also spreadinginland. Foreign visitors are no longerconcentrated in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen; their itineraries (行程) now reach nearly 500 cities across China, with homestay bookings in smaller destinations such as Ili, Altay and Qiandongnan more than doubling year on year during the summer.

For Lambert, the planning of the next trip is already settled. “My original suitcase was full a long time ago,” he said. “Next time, I’m bringing three empty ones.” The haul, in other words, is no longer a souvenir. It is the itinerary.
